Going Green

I've always known that my husband had a shade of green in him, but I always thought it was because of his knowledge of John Deere tractors. But, several months ago he decided that we should start recycling. There's a box under our kitchen sink that we toss items into that can easily be taken to the recycling center. We figured we should do our part in helping the environment. And although we're not brave enough to go completely green (something about cloth diapers is not intriguing), we figured we could do a little. Our commitment is on somewhat of a higher level than some perhaps since we can't simply put the recycle box out on the curb and have it whisked away by the Sorting Truck. Layne actually takes all our recyclable stuff in his truck and sorts it himself. (I guess I have my very own Sorting Truck, of sorts).

It's amazing how much garbage you throw away that actually can be recycled! There's just some items that I would never think about recycling, but this morning I went into our bathroom to get ready for the day and on the counter was a disassembled container of dental floss. Yes, my husband had taken it apart, removed the non-plastic parts which were now in the garbage can, and left the rest of it there on the counter indicating that it would not be thrown away but should be recycled. A little plastic dental floss box? Yes, even it can be recycled.

And so I believe the shade of green in our home has darkened. Before long I'm sure we'll be taking our own "green bags" to the grocery store, and perhaps even standing with a sign protesting bottled water. But for now I'll continue carefully watching what I throw away otherwise I'll be kindly reminded that it could be recycled.
